Radiopharmaceuticals

A Radiopharmaceutical is a medicine that can be used for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. It consists of an organic molecule linked by a radioisotope. The organic molecule transports the radioisotope to certain organs, tissues, or cells. These characteristics are used to select the radioisotope. Radioisotopes that emit penetrating gamma rays are utilised for diagnostic (imaging) purposes, where the radiation must leave the body before being detected by a specific instrument. Because of radioactive decay and ordinary biological waste, the radiation emitted by an imaging isotope frequently vanishes completely after one day.
